I recommend this plugin because it’s cheap compared to the alternatives, it’s easy to setup, it has an intuitive design and it comes with all the functionality needed to comply with the privacy laws in any country in the world.

Price comparison for other plugins with a yearly plan:

WordPress cookie plugin

Price in $

CookieYes (Free)

$0

Complianz

$59

Webtoffee

$69

Cookiebot

$96

Termly

$120

CookieYes (Paid)

$250 (With popup)

Yes free alternatives exists but like CookieYes, they are limited in either page views or functionality, and for that reason I recommend Webtoffee.

Step 1: Installation

You can choose a plan for a single site or if you have a couple of friends you can share a plan for more sites and save money. Don’t worry there’s a 30 day money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied.

After purchasing the plugin simply click on “Download zip” and then install the plugin on your WordPress website. Also, save your License Key which you will need later for activation.

After installation and activation go to the Licence tab and insert your Licence Key and email address.

Step 2: Settings

Start by disabling the cookie banner, since we need to get it properly setup first. Then choose your consent law, GDPR for Europe or US State Laws. I recommend targeting all visitors Worldwide since it gives a good impression of your site and because geo-targeting can cause a delay when loading your website.

Turn on IAB TFC 2.2 only if you’ve chosen GDPR and expect to do ads or remarketing.

Layout

Under Layout I recommend picking Popup Type since it forces the visitor to make a choice regarding cookies before browsing your website. In this way, if they accept cookies, you’ll get tracking data for their entire visit on your site.

Step 3: Content & Colors

Go through each subject and optionally adjust the text. If the language doesn’t fit your websites language, then we can easily change it under the “Languages” tab. Here you can also add more languages if you have a multilingual site. Under “Cookie Policy link”, insert the link to your cookie page. If you don’t have one, then you can create one automatically under the “Cookie Policy” tab.

If you’re in Italy, then you’re required to enable the X button, otherwise I recommend keeping it disabled.

Also if you’re in Europe and using any Google service like Google Analytics, then GDPR requires you to enable the Google privacy policy link.

Optional: Cookie Policy

If you haven’t already created a Cookie Policy page now is the time. Simply click the blue button and publish the page. Now add a link to the page in the footer of your website. The page includes a button to revisit the consent which is required by GDPR.

Optional: Google consent mode

If you’re using Google Ads and/or remarketing then it’s mandatory to enable Google Consent Mode, since Google might otherwise block the ads completely without the proper consent.

Step 4: Cookie scanning

Before starting the cookie scanner I recommend:

Make sure any “Maintenance mode” or “Hide my site” plugins are deactivated, otherwise the scanner won’t be able to register any cookies.

Make sure your Analytics tracking code is installed and working.

If you expect to embed Youtube or Vimeo videos on your website, make sure to add at least one video from each channel before scanning. Add the video to a published post or page – private posts won’t work

Don’t do any updates on the site while scanning

Step 5: Cookie categories

After the scan is complete it’s time to assess your cookies and make sure they’re properly organized. Be mindful that Analytics tracking cookies can’t be categorized as essential cookies, since they require explicit consent.

Remove any unused categories by clicking the pencil and disabling “Show category on cookie banner”.

Optional: Caching issues

Also, if you’re using a caching plugin I recommend excluding this folder, since it otherwise could cause issues:

/wp-content/plugins/webtoffee-cookie-consent/lite/frontend/js/(.*).min.js

The asterix meaning all JavaScript files within this folder.

Step 6: Activate

Last but not least, click Activate under “Enable cookie banner” to finalize the setup.

Are the quizzes metaboxes mising from your Sensei LMS lessons pages after updating to the version 3.9.1.2.3.3? There is a really quick fix which is simply to activate the Classic Editor plugin.

If that doesn’t work you probably have version 3.9.0.2.3.3 installed. In that case simply update the plugin to 3.9.1.2.3.3 or later and install the Classic Editor.

The reason behind the issue is that Sensei LMS has started using Gutenberg blocks to create quizzes, which now seems to be the new standard method. However for Page Builder users this doesn’t make sense, so luckily the legacy metaboxes can easily be activated again by using the Classic Editor.

Tags

Let start by having a look at Mailchimp tags. This is a simple way of keeping your subscribers organized to any way you see fit, without them knowing about it. You could for example add a tag to a new list you’re importing, to remember where they came from.

You can import at list under:

Audience → All contacts → Add contacts → Import contacts

Adding a tag to your imported subscribers is done very easily by selecting a tag just after uploading your list. Then you can view and sort your subscribers with your new tag.

With your subscribers tagged its very easy to send out newsletters to these specific subscribers.

Groups

Groups on the other hand, gives your subscribers a way to select what they’re interested in. So Groups are shown on your signup forms whereas tags are hidden – for your eyes only. Groups are also visible on the “Update preferences” page which usually is linked to in your newsletter footer.

You can change the look of the “Update preferences” page by going to:

Signup forms → Form Builder

And then selecting “Update profile form” in the dropdown.

If you don’t have the “update preferences” link in your newsletter footer you can use this shortcode to add it:

*|UPDATE_PROFILE|*

Let’s go back to the “Form builder” where I’ll show you the different ways you can create groups. The most standard way is using checkboxes which makes it possible for the subscriber to select any number of topics that he or she is interest in.

But if you want to force your subscribers to choose only one subject then you can use either Radio Buttons or a dropdown. This is clever if you fx are a University and you are sending out specific newsletters to Staff, Faculty and Students.

Adding your new signup form to your website

Its important to note that if you already have a signup form on your website then it will NOT automatically add the groups to that form. So after adding Groups you have to upload a new form to your site.

How to do this depends on what tool you use to add your signup form. If you are using the simplest way with an embed code, then you simply need to add a new embed code to your website.

So after adding your group in the Form Builder, go to:

Signup forms → Embedded forms

And then copy the code from there to your website. Now your subscribers can choose a group when they signup to your newsletter.

If you for example are using a plugin in WordPress, its not guaranteed to work with groups, but you should be able to figure that out by looking at the plugins settings or documentation.

Inform your existing subscribers about the new groups

Last but not least, let’s have a look at how to let your existing subscribers know that they now have the option to select a topic for your newsletter. This is quite simple, we will create a new newsletter and describe the new options and then insert a nice big button.

In the button link we choose “Web address” and insert the MERGE TAG for the “Update preferences” page:

*|UPDATE_PROFILE|*

Read more about how to use this MERGE TAG here:
https://mailchimp.com/help/add-an-update-profile-link/

Now they will hopefully select a topic and you will be able to send out more specific newsletters to your current subscribers.

Because some might miss the newsletter or fail to see the button, then I recommend you keep the button in the next 3 newsletters. You can place the button and info near the bottom of your newsletter.

If you’ve already tagged some of your subscribers, you can easily add these tagged subscribers to a group manually. Simply go to:

Audience → All contacts

Then filter for the tag, mark all and finally add them to the group.

Ease your workflow with email templates

Last but not least I suggest making an email template for each group. This is just a smart way to ease your workflow and save time every time you create a new newsletter for each of your groups.

You can do that by going to:

Campaigns → Email templates

And then replicate your existing template and adjust it as needed.

This tutorial covers the following subjects:

Creating and adding your API key

Creating your fields including firstname and lastname

Adding Groups checkbox fields

Adding a GDPR checkbox

Adding CSS Classes to layout our form

Adding a tag to the specific form

Changing the confirmation message

Here’s the GDPR checkbox code snippet:

I have read and accept the <a href="#" target=”_blank”>Privacy Policy</a>

Read the tutorial in text format

The Mailchimp addon is a basic addon for Gravity Forms which means that you get it with any of their licence plans.

Installation and setup is fast and easy:

Go to the Add-Ons tab in your WordPress dashboard

Find the Mailchimp Add-On and Install

Now find your API Key in your Mailchimp account under: Account → Extras → API Keys (Create a key if you don’t have one)

Copy the API key and add it to the Settings found under the specific Mailchimp settings

And now you’re ready for the next step which is creating your form

Create a signup form

I strongly recommend adding the first and lastname to your form because it helps you to avoid the spamfilter. For more information I’ve made a thorough video on Youtube about How to avoid spam filter in Mailchimp.

It’s important to use the specific email input field, which is found under “Advanced fields”.

Otherwise you cannot create the next step which is setting up your Mailchimp Feed.

But, before we setup our feed, just a quick note. If you’re in the EU or another country with strict privacy laws it’s can be a good idea to add a privacy consent box as well.

This is just a simple checkbox which says something like this:

I have read and accept the <a href="#" target=”_blank”>Privacy Policy</a>

Remember to replace the hashtag with a link to your privacy policy page.

The link is set to open in a new window so it doesn’t lead people away from the actual signup form if they click it. Since the text is self-explanatory we can go to appearance and change the field label visibility to hidden.

Remember to make this box required as well.

Let’s also add our Groups with a checkbox. I will simply insert the same options as I’ve already created them in my Mailchimp account.

This field CAN be made required to FORCE a selection or just leave it as it is, whichever you prefer.

As an extra icing on the cake you can also add custom error messages to each input field, just to help anyone having trouble filling out your form.

Also if you want to align the first and lastname side-by-side you can add the css classes gf_left_half and gf_right_half.

Watch a more thorough tutorial about Gravity Forms CSS classes on my Youtube channel.

Create a mailchimp feed

Okay now we’re ready to link our form to Mailchimp with our feed.

Start by choosing your list

Then select the corresponding field to your form

If you’ve created Groups in Mailchimp you can now assign your fields to the right selections. Choose “If” and select the corresponding fields.

Marketing permissions will be visible if you have GDPR fields activated.

Next you can check double-optin or leave it unchecked for single-optin.

You can also tag the subscribers coming from this specific form.

Tagging you subscribers is a smart way to keep track of who signs up on which forms on your website. If you fx a running a campaign on a landing page, you can put in the tag “Freebie campaign 2021” and then send specific newsletters to these subscribers.

Now we’ve setup our feed so it’s time to save it. I always recommend giving your forms a test so I suggest making a draft or private page on your website, to test your new newsletter signup form.

Lastly, to change the confirmation message, simply go to:

Settings → Confirmations

And update the text.
